The Big Bang

Extraterrestrial Life

"The idea of life in outer space is a very old one, going back to the Greek philosophers. The existence of other inhabitable worlds and extraterrestrial life has for hundreds of years been one of the few very prime questions in science. Not only would their discovery provide a bonanza of new scientific information, it would provide great insights concerning the significance and destiny of humanity: Where did we come from, are we unique, what is our place in the cosmos, and what might our future be?" - Seth Shostak, Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist's Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

American Astronomical Society

"The mission of the American Astronomical Society is to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the Universe."

LHL Lecture - A Nightwatchman's Journey

November 7, 2019.
The Speaker:
David H. Levy is one of the most successful comet hunters in history. He has discovered 22 comets, nine of them using his own backyard telescopes. With Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California he discovered Shoemaker-Levy 9, the comet that collided with Jupiter in 1994.

He is the author or editor of 35 books, and won an Emmy in 1998 as part of the writing team for the Discovery Channel documentary, Three Minutes to Impact. A contributing editor for Sky and Telescope Magazine, he writes its monthly “Star Trails” column, and his “Nightfall” feature appears in each issue of the Canadian magazine, Skynews.
