Who Can Borrow Materials

Linda Hall is open to the public. Borrowing privileges to check items out of the library are limited to individuals living within the Kansas City Metropolitan Area:

  • Missouri Counties: Bates, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Platte, Ray
  • Kansas Counties: Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami, Wyandotte
  • Students and faculty of academic institutions in the Courtesy Card program
  • High school students with credit card information provided by a parent (who must be present at registration)
  • Established business within the KCMO area that have completed the Corporate Borrower application
  • Document delivery services customers via interlibrary loan

LHL is an independent institution, not affiliated with the Kansas City Public Library or the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). Patrons who wish to check items out to take home must:

  • Complete the online application to set up a library account
  • Show a current photo ID (driver's license, school ID, etc.) in person
  • Provide valid credit or debit card information (information is stored off-site on a secured server)

Restrictions

The following materials do not circulate outside the library:

  • Journal issues (bound or unbound)
  • Technical reports
  • Standards
  • Conference proceedings
  • Microforms (fiche, card, film)
  • Rare books from the History of Science Collection
  • Maps and folios
  • Reference books
  • Materials published before 1922

Linda Hall Library reserves the right to deny circulation of any item determined to be fragile or difficult to replace.

Corporate Borrower Program

Established businesses within the KC Metro area may apply for a Corporate Borrower account; see the list of Missouri/Kansas counties under Who Can Borrow Materials.  Corporate accounts may have up to 12 authorized borrowers.

Circulation Policy

Items can be checked out for 3 weeks. Patrons are allowed two renewals (3 weeks each) if no request has been placed on the item. 

  • All borrowers must provide their LHL library card or photo ID at time of check-out.
  • Adult and courtesy card borrowers may checkout a total of 10 items.
  • High school students (student w/parent) may check-out a total of 5 items.
  • Patrons with overdue items will not be able to check-out additional items.  Abuse of the loan agreement may result in the loss of borrowing privileges.
  • A damage fee of $25 will be assessed on an individual basis unless the item needs to be replaced.
  • A standard replacement cost of $150 will be charged for each item not returned in a timely manner.  A $25 processing fee will be added to all credit card transactions.
