This guide compiles free and open access resources available to researchers. With a focus on Linda Hall Library patrons, this guide prioritizes free resources geared towards science, technology, and engineering research.

Public Libraries

Check your local public library to see what they offer for STEM research. 

Available through the Kansas City Public Library, as of December 2025:

  • Academic Search Elite -  provides high-quality, scholarly articles about academic subjects. This site contains full text articles for more than 2,100 journals and over 1,700 peer-reviewed, full-text journals.
  • Archives Unbound - digital collections of historical documents that support the research and study needs of scholars and students at the college and university level.
  • Article First - search the contents and pages of more than 16,000 scholarly, academic journals.
  • Consumer Health Complete - Health information for patients covering mainstream medicine to holistic and integrated medicine.
  • EBSCO Databases - A collection of databases covering a wide range of subjects.
  • Gale Interactive Science - provides engaging, interactive models that bring science to life.
  • Science Reference Center - provides access to hundreds of science encyclopedias, reference books, articles, and other sources.
  • Statista - Over 1 million statistics on 80,000 topics from more than 22,500 sources and 170 different industries
