Free & Open Access Resources

This guide compiles free and open access resources available to researchers. With a focus on Linda Hall Library patrons, this guide prioritizes free resources geared towards science, technology, and engineering research.

arXiv, ChemRxiv, bioRxiv, and More

Preprint servers are open repositories where researchers can deposit their preprint, the version of the article that has been submitted for publication and not yet peer reviewed. If the preprint has since been peer reviewed and accepted for publication in a journal, there should be a link from the preprint to the article (which may or may not be paywalled) on the publisher's website.

  • The preprint servers don't always link out to the peer-reviewed, published versions, so it's a good idea to search the title in Google or Google Scholar as well.
Repository Covers
arXiv link 1.8 million preprints in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics
ChemRxiv link Preprints in the chemical sciences
bioRxiv link Preprints in the biological sciences. (For COVID-19 preprints)
medRxiv link Preprints in the health sciences. (For COVID-19 preprints)
Earth ArXiv Preprints in earth sciences and related planetary sciences.
ssrn Preprints and other open publications. Originally the Social Science Research Network, but has branched into STEM areas.
