Science Fair Resources: Linda Hall Science Fair Awards

Blue Ribbon Exhibit

Each year about 25 projects from the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair are selected to participate in a display of award winning exhibits in the Library’s main reading room.

Experiments and inventions are chosen for this exhibit based on the quality of the scientific content, the uniqueness of the study, and the presentation of the results. Students, their sponsoring teachers, and families are invited to attend a reception celebrating their work.

The Shipman Award

The Shipman Award is given annually in memory of Joseph C. Shipman, the first director of the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering and Technology. Each year, to honor Mr. Shipman's legacy of devotion to science, a cash award is given to a student whose paper best demonstrates a scientific understanding of a specific topic. The cash prize is divided between the student, to be used for college expenses, and the sponsoring teacher, to be used for materials to enhance teaching.

The award each year is granted to a senior project chosen at the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair. The winning project will be one that makes excellent use of the scientific literature and shows a skilled presentation of the literature in the context of the project.

Judging Criteria

1. A substantial and appropriate use of the scientific literature which may include web sites but should also include peer reviewed scientific journals (whether online or in-print).

2. A well written literature review and project description.

3. Proper citation of all scientific literature.
